Deep purple color. The nose is delightfully spicy, with tobacco, black pepper and green herbs over a deep core of plum and tart currant fruit, with notes of fallen leaves and dried mushrooms. The palate sports crisp acidity and grippy tannins, and the balance is on point, build solidly but fresh and vibrant, with tangy currant and red plum fruit. The complexity is great, with these spiced tea, tar, black pepper, chewing tobacco and dried violets. This has a lot of depth, personality and age-worthiness packed in, and it’s a crazy good value for a Barolo – which is quite the rare treat. Give it a decant or a leave plenty for the second day, but this is delightful.
The 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is a new wine from Vietti. It soars out of the glass with a captivating bouquet redolent of crushed flowers, herbs, mint and orange peel. The aromatics alone are beguiling. Nervy and classic in build, with gorgeous inner sweetness, the 2019 is utterly irresistible.
Scents of tangerine and peach carry into the flavors, along with crushed apple and white cherry. Couched in a silky texture, its plush fruit is enriched by a hint of brown spice and lingers on the clean finish.
2022 James Suckling Top 100 Italian Wines #45.
The freshness and firmness of this young 2017 Barbaresco is impressive. The wine is tight and reserved, but suggests greatness, offering cherries, dark cherries, dried flowers and crushed stones. Intense tannins. This is a wine for the cellar. Give it five or six years of bottle age. Try after 2027.
HISTORICAL RE-RELEASE. Masses of crushed black cherries, plum sauce, grilled herbs and worn leather are offset by a hint of graphite as the 2013 Carmignano Villa di Capezzana Dieci Anni slowly awakens in the glass. Seductively silky and enveloping, it coats the palate with ripe red and blue fruits, excited by a tinge of sour citrus. Rosy inner florals form toward the close. This is sultry and staining through the finish as adolescent tannins grumble, yet the mouth is left watering for more, leaving notes of dark chocolate and espresso bean to slowly fade. The 2013 is steadily moving toward maturity, with many years of positive development ahead.
Tenuta Scerscé coaxes from their vines something truly special. This wine, the Essenza, opens with aromas of fresh cherries, herbal tea, cola and wildflowers. The palate is plump with juicy red-fruit notes that are balanced by notes of dried herbs and fresh earth. Fine tannins and crisp acidity show that this wine will drink well for a long while. Drink now-2040.
